Why Deep Fryers?

Owning your own deep fryer comes with a set of great benefits that’ll make even the most health-obsessed person think about buying one.

You Pick the Oil

The biggest benefit of a home deep fryer is the fact that you control the oil used. Many restaurants (especially the inexpensive ones) don’t change the oil for a long time and use the lowest-quality one. When you own a deep fryer, you select what kind of oil to use and when to get rid of it.

And, as you will learn later in the article, some of these come with special oil filters, which allow you to keep the oil fresh for longer.

It’s Fast

The Advantages of Home Deep Fryer

Deep frying is one of the fastest ways of preparing food. Especially if you think how tasty it is.

How is that possible?

All that thanks to the basic laws of physics. Simply speaking, the heat transfer between the liquid (hot oil) and the food is much faster compared to air.

In terms of time required, a deep fryer outperform ovens easily because of the fast heating element.

Food Tastes Great

Even though speed of cooking is important, it’s the taste that makes most people crave deep-fried snacks. This is because the oil “seals” the flavor in and adds a bit of it on its own. Who’s up for deep-fried chicken wings?

Keeps the Food Tender

Another important advantage of deep-frying your favorite meat is its tenderness. Unlike food cooked in an oven, deep fried foods doesn’t lose all the water (thanks to the layer of oil on the surface) and tastes way, way better. This is true even if you slightly overcook it.

There’s a Lot of Food You Can Deep Fry

Onion rings, French fries, cheese, fish sticks, chicken fingers, eggs, chips, doughnuts, fruits – there are so many things which can be deep-fried, getting a deep fryer could leave you busy for months!

Some people even deep fry olives or ice-cream (yes its possible)!

And, what’s even more important is the fact that deep fried foods tastes completely different compared to the same meals prepared using other forms of cooking. This means that it never gets boring!

The Advantages of Home Deep Fryer

What Oil to Use for Deep Frying?

Because oil is the core ingredient of the deep-frying process, you need to make sure that you choose the right one. What’s most important is the smoke point.

Typically, the higher it is, the better.

Of course, there is no standard fit. However, canola, peanut, and sunflower are probably the two most popular ones as they can be heated to high temperature easily. Depending on what you're cooking, you'll want to use different types of oils. For example, canola oil works great for fries, but not so good with some seafoods.

Of course, the choice of oil is one thing. Before you put in the food, you need to make sure that the oil desired temperature is accurate. If it’s too low, the oil will seep into the food. And if it’s too high, it could dry it out, significantly changing its taste. For the worse.

How to Choose the The Deep Fryer That Fits You

How to Choose the Best Deep Fryer

There are a couple features that can be decisive when choosing the right deep fryer. The process is similar to how to choose a frying pan.

While criteria such as safety features or quality of the materials used are critical, they are so obvious that I wouldn’t even try to recommend you a deep fryer that was not meeting both of them.

Instead, let’s focus on things that will impact the way you use the deep fryer:

1. Basket Capacity

How much fried food do you want to prepare at once?

Remember that the more food you put in, the more oil you need to add. Electric deep fryers are not necessarily the biggest or a large family size fryer.

If you need it just for yourself, you can go for the smallest one possible. But, if you are planning to use it to prepare dinners for your friends and large family, you might consider getting one with a larger basket – so that no one has to wait for their turn. The larger basket provides a large capacity for cooking. A large capacity fryer takes up more counter space but you always store them under the counter if neccessary.

Some readers even buy multiple baskets such as the Secura Triple Baskets. While multiple baskets has it's benefits, the baskets could be smaller and when cooking for more than one person, it could take longer. A dual basket fryer are also quite popular these days. With a dual basket your cooking can be more versatile.

2. Ease of Use

By ease of use I mean both the number of functions that it has, buttons that you need to click to get it running, as well as the ease of cleaning. In fact, the letter might be even more important – as oil is not something that you should be joking about when it comes to washing the dishes.

Luckily, almost all parts of two out of the three electric deep fryers reviewed can be put in a dishwasher. I'm all for dishwasher safe equipement. However, even if you don't buy a dishwasher safe air fryer, the mess makes for a relatively easy clean since fried food do not stick to the baskets.

But dishwasher safe isn't the only convenient features you should look for. One specific parts is the lid. Some fryers does not have a lid that has glass or viewing window. If that is the case, you won't be able to see the food you cook in the oil in your basket. Best to have a good lid that is see through and so you can monitor the temperature with the built in thermostat.

Another thing worth thinking about before you make a purchase is what you’re going to do with the oil. If you don’t mind getting rid of it after the meal is prepared, then you can ignore that point. But, if you would like to reuse it – and preferably keep it fresh for as long as possible, you might consider a deep fryer with an oil filtering system or oil container. That will improve your clean cooking process.

Lastly, easy clean (or easy cleanup) is another consideration. While the cooking process is the same for all fryers, easy clean is definitely a bonus. For some fryers, food get trapped in between the basket and the heating element, thus makes for a horrible cleanup. So your cooking process might be quick and easy, but your cleanup will not.

3. Its Power

How to Choose the Best Deep Fryer

Of course, let’s not forget about the time it takes to actually heat the oil to the right temperature. All reviewed deep fryers are electric.

Those take longer to heat than propane alternatives, but, the same time, are a lot more convenient.

Naturally, still the deep fryer is one of the most convenient and fastest cooking appliances you can get. With a timer that links up to the cooking, you can put your food in and walk away. Not all deep fryer have a timer though.

The more powerful it is, the faster the oil will get hot (and re-heated once you add in the food) and in the right desired temperature.

But it will also need more electricity to work.

4. Easy Cleaning

Some fryers are harder to clean than others. One way to maintain a clean deep fryer is to always wash and rinse after every use.

Wiping the sides, removing deep fried foods waste, storing used oil, getting a brush for the large basket, and making sure the frying baskets are clean will ensure that your deep fryer lasts a long time. Another thing to consider is the easy cleaning of the lid after cooking.

A clean deep fryer will improve the overall taste of food and get oil to the right temperature. The quality of your frying links to the number of times you're cleaning your deep fryer.

5. Oil Container

A fryer oil storage container is essential a fryer. Since you'll likely not use oil once and throw it away, you'll need to store your oil to move easily. Some store it in a large pot, but we prefer not to. A pot takes away from the function of a pot, which is to cook food. Also, a pot lid is not as air tight as an oil container.

Oil storage containers usually come in a metal container with a handle for easy storage and easy cleanup. Some oil containers are included with the deep fryer.

6. Price

Even though a deep fryer won’t set you back a fortune, it’s still a good idea to consider how much you’re willing to pay for one. If you aren’t going to use it that often, there is no point in getting a high-end device – no matter how many guests you will have on that dinner you’re making once a year.

Other considerations include the capacity and looks. If your counter top or storage cabinets aren't big enough, get a smaller air fryer. If you're going for looks, get a stainless steel one to match your stainless steel frying pans or ceramic cooking knives.

What Are The Well Known Deep Fryer Brands?

As with anything, the market is flooded with fryers what could make the final choice a bit tricky. Based on my cooking experience and tests, when it comes to performance, it’s hard to beat anything from T Fal.

But, it’s not the only brand worth taking a closer look at – there are some pretty decent models from Presto and Hamilton which I also often recommend.

And all three companies have one of their products reviewed in my article below.

What’s A Great Deep Fryer for Home? – Top 3 Choices for 2024

Below is a short list of, in my opinion, the top electric deep fryer you can buy for your home kitchen.

While there were quite a few appliances to choose from, I focused specifically on those that were highest-rated, correct desired temperature, with budget, capacity, and power in mind.

So, what are they?

What do you do with the oil after you finish cooking?  Do you throw it away? Or store it inside the appliance, making it impossible to clean it properly?

With T-Fal FR8000, you can both keep the oil and clean the fryer – easily! Food tastes great! It's a 3.5 liter or approximatly 4 quart fryer.

Keeps the Oil Fresh for Longer

One of the biggest advantages this appliance has over its competitors is its patented oil filtering mechanism, which allows you to remove the oil from it, filter it, and clean the fryer. Cooking and frying made easy.

All that without risking spilling the oil all over the kitchen. On top of that, because the oil gets filtered, it can be reused several times, making the fryer a lot more efficient. Filtered oil can also be used three or several times more than unfiltered oil keeping your food tasting great.

T-Fal FR8000 Deep Fryer with Basket

What Features I Like about This Deep Fryer?

  • It’s really powerful. 1700 Watts help make the oil hot very quickly and re-heat it once you add frozen food. The latter could be quite challenging for a device with less power, considering that this deep fryer has a huge capacity of 3.5 L.
  • Makes it easy to reuse the oil. As mentioned above, its patented oil filtration system allows you to remove filtered oil and reuse it when you feel like it (using an oil container). An oil filtration system is not standard for a fryer but this feature itself may earn our top recommendation.
  • Effective odor control. While it’s probably possible to eliminate the smell of deep frying completely, the odor control system significantly reduces its overall intensity.
  • Super easy to clean. Everything except the power cord and the heating element can be removed and put in the dishwasher (dishwasher safe baby!). Easy cleanup!
  • Speed. This fryer heats up quickly. No longer do you have to wait for the oil to get hot to get cooking. It's fast for home cooks.

And What I Don’t Like?

  • Poor lid design & narrow basket hanger. Unfortunately, if you want to take the basket out and hang it, you’ll quickly come across two problems. First, you’ll need to lift the lid / viewing window to an uncomfortable position which makes hanging inconvenient. Second, the lid hanger is so narrow, trying to hang the basket full of hot food can be quite challenging the first time around. Only the Cuisinart offers a better lid design.

Even though T-Fal FR8000 has some minor shortcomings (like the lid), it’s still the top deep fryer you can get for the money. It can cook pounds of food like chicken wings in the frying basket.

This, together with its great oil heating time and huge capacity make the choice of this deep fryer a no-brainer.

Unless you live alone. In that case, you might be more interested in the next fryer in the list – Presto FryDaddy.

Presto 05420 FryDaddy Electric Deep Fryer

Best On Budget

If you don’t necessarily need a super fancy deep fryer – either because you don’t really deep fry the food that often or because you live alone (or both), you will most likely enjoy Presto’s FryDaddy – which, in my opinion, is one of the handiest kitchen appliances I’ve ever seen.

Low Price Doesn’t Have to Mean Low Quality!

Even though this deep fryer comes at a terrific price point, it’s one of the highest-rated fryers on Amazon.

And, let’s be honest – over 2,100 people can’t be wrong. Or can they?

Let’s go over its top advantages and disadvantages and check that ourselves.

Presto 05420 FryDaddy Electric Deep Fryer

What Features I Like about This Deep Fryer?

  • Perfect for small dishes. Because of its small capacity, it’s very convenient for cooking small dishes or snacks. Side dishes like crispy cut fries. The heating element is enough for cooking fried foods in the small basket. You don't need a 4 quart fryer for small dishes.
  • Ideal for one or two people. For the same reason, it’s an excellent choice for someone who lives alone or for a couple. The good news is, while it’s small, that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare a dinner for four, six or even eight people in it. But you will need to take turns. It also fits really nicely on counter space.
  • Affordable. Comes at the price of a few cups of coffee and yet it’s one of the top deep fryer you can get.
  • Handy basket. Because it’s so small, it can be stored or taken anywhere. Enjoy your favorite homemade deep fried foods on the road with very few removable parts.
  • Can be used to fry bacon. As tested by reviewers on Amazon. If you’re a big bacon fun, there’s nothing easier than using this little buddy for cooking 2-3 pieces of bacon in the morning.
  • Accurate And Adjustable Thermostat. Even though it’s small and doesn’t cost much, its thermostat is surprisingly accurate. And you can see that it heats up quickly.

And What I Don’t Like?

  • Easy to add too much oil. Because it’s so small, you need to be very careful with the amount of oil that you add and the food that you put inside.
  • Stores the oil without filtering. If you want to reuse the oil, your best bet is just leaving it inside. No filtering or easy way of removing it. An alternative is to use an oil container.
  • The body of the fryer gets hot. Really hot. Never touch it when it’s on. Luckily, it comes with a magnetic type plug, which means you don’t have to touch it to unplug it.
  • You can’t close the lid while frying. I don’t understand the design idea behind it but it’s true. Because the lid is made of plastic, it would not withstand the temperature – which means you need to remove the lid to fry the food. Sadly, the smell quickly gets all around your house.
  • Hard to wash. Because you need to remove the oil completely and there’re not many parts you can take out of it, it’s not the easiest deep fryer to clean. But still dishwasher safe.
  • Fish. Because of the circular shape of the fryer it is like a pot. Frying a fish is not easy nor should you try. If you are into frying fish, look at Cuisinart.

The list of drawbacks might seem long. But they are all quite insignificant if the main advantages – small size (i.e. it won't cook pounds of food), portability, and low price are what you’re looking for.

If that’s the case, FryDaddy is the top deep fryer you can get – hit the button to check its current price and learn more about it:

Top Deep Fryer Reviews #3
Hamilton Beach (35033) Deep Fryer, With Basket, 2.8 Liter Oil Capacity

Top Deep Fryer for under $50

The last deep fryer in the list is a perfect mix between price and features. While it’s more expensive than FryDaddy, it’s more affordable than T-Fal. T-fal is a great deep fryer brand and so is Hamilton Beach. They make a bunch of electric kitchen gadgets from air fryers, toaster ovens and deep fryers.

And while, naturally, a bit smaller than the latter, its size might be one of its significant advantages.

Perfect for the Average Kitchen

Hamilton Beach is neither great because it’s handy nor because it’s powerful and huge. The heating element can produce high enough temperature to make delicious fries with minimal oil. Who doesn't like fries?

In fact, it seems to be perfectly in the middle – in terms of size, price and power.

But is that a bad thing?

I believe that for most people, its features are the exact sweet spot. What are some of its advantages?

est Deep Fryer of 2019

What Features I Like about This Deep Fryer?

  • 8 Cup Capacity (twice that of FryDaddy). The basket size seems to be ideal for a typical household consisting of 3 to 5 people or a small family. It still won't cook pounds of food.
  • Cooks Really Fast And Heats Up Quickly. And if you need to accommodate more people, it’s quite fast, so it’s easy to prepare the next batch for the guests. Best of all it's dishwasher safe for a quick turnover.
  • Easy and intuitive controls. It’s very easy to use and, most importantly hard to mess anything up – which is important considering that hot oil can get very hot.
  • Convenient storage. All parts can be stored inside – even the cord! This saves lots of space in a cupboard or wherever you wish to store it.
  • Magnetic type plug. No risk of spilling the hot oil all over the kitchen when someone steps on the cord. Easy to use for all family members.
  • See through lid. The see through glass lid (or viewing window) allows you to see foods you cook all the way. A convenient viewing window if you will. From the time the fryer heats up the oil, to the foods cooking in hihg heat, you'll see the cooking of foods all the way.

And What I Don’t Like?

  • Water condensing under the lid. It’s neither safe nor convenient, especially considering how “aggressively” hot oil reacts with water. Although it is dishwasher safe.
  • You need to test the temperature manually after purchase. Unfortunately, there’ve been quite a few instances of people receiving faulty products which didn’t produce a high-enough temperature. Because of that, it’s best to test the temperature manually from time to time.

Hamilton Beach is a perfect mix of high-end electric deep fryer features with convenience and affordability of a much smaller appliance and won't cook pounds of food. If this sweet spot is exactly what you need, don’t hesitate and go right to Amazon to get it at the lowest price:

What is the best frying brand?

Most would say Cuisinart CDF but we would recommend T Fal. T Fal has a strong kitcneh brand and makes more than just deep fryers. They are very well known for their frying pan market domination as well as other kitchen appliances and home appliances.

What is the best deep fryer cookbook?

Our favorite is Fry It Like A Pro by Eli Jacobs. It's an easy to follow recipe book that's practical, and links to foods you can easily cook in your home kitchen. The recipe contains foods for fryers that heats up quickly such as fried chicken.

What is the best fryer with rotisserie?

The best deep fryer with rotisserie is Cuisinart CDF 500. It has a 5 liter option that can cook a turkey or pounds of food using less oil than a traditional fryer. In addition, the Cuisinart CDF has an adjustable temperature control with a cool-touch handle.

Why are lids important for deep fryers?

The lid of a deep fryer is your viewing window into the food you fry. Consider making fries at a hot temperature. You won't know the color of the fries are (i.e. how cooked the food is) until you can see through the lid.

Why do you need an oil container?

An oil container helps keep your oil fresh. In addition, it's for easy cleaning after frying your french fries Consider getting a large capacity oil container that is 4 quart or more for a large deep fryer.

What are multiple basket deep fryers?

Multiple basket deep fryers (or "multi-basket fryer" for short) are deep fryers with more than one basket. They usually have two smaller baskets and can help speed up the cooking process. Two smaller oil containers (one oil container for one food and another oil container for another dish) can cook different foods at the same time such as fish and chips. Some electric deep fryers comes with three baskets. Home cooks who cook foods simultaneously should consider a fryer that comes with three baskets.

What temperature do deep fryers fry at?

Most deep fryers fry between the temperature of 265 degrees Fahrenheit to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Some deep fryer have a temperature control guage or temperature knob to control the heat. We recommend cooking with deep fryers that have temperature control becuase cooking without can leave food burnt and increase cleanup time.

What oils should use with an electric deep fryer?

The best oils to use are canola oil and peanut oil. Both have a very high smoke point. Canola oil has a smoke point of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Peanut oil has a smoking point of 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Having high smoking point oils can help keep foods stable when deep frying. To keep your oil fresh, consider a deep fryer with an oil filtration system.

How should I dispose of my deep fryer oil?

Never pour used deep fryer oil down the drain. To property dispose of the oil, take the oil and pour it into a used grocery bag. Because the bag could leak, it's recommended to put it outside of your kitchen and into a dumpster. However, some cities have recycling programs which collect used oil from homes and restaurants.

Choosing A Deep Fryer Doesn’t Have to be Hard.

When making a choice, it’s important to consider how many people will be using it, its capacity, and whether you want a high-end, extremely fast appliance that heats up quickly or you don’t mind waiting a few minutes more but would like to save some money and have a product that’s inexpensive but still effective.

Some other considerations is the quality of the frying basket, safety features, breakaway cord, and removable parts. Buying a replacement frying basket can be difficult to find so make sure you do your research beforehand.

To have a quick look at top three choices for 2024 once again, scroll back to the table and make a pick! It may earn you more time with your family and friends.
